As a beginner to crochet I remember when my maternal grandmother gave me ONE simple hook with no handle and a very small ball of old yarn, that has been reused numerous times, then taught me the very basics of holding the tools and materials.
That started my journey into the amazing world of crochet, I was probably 9 or 10 years then. It has been such a long time I do not even recall when I started learning crochet from my grandma and my mother, I am the 4th generation (as far as I know) who has been doing these handicrafts. I was a mere infant when my great grandmother (mothers-side) passed away so I never got to learn from her but I do safe-keep her creations in fine thread from decades ago.
Basic Crochet Hooks
The very basic crochet hooks are either made of plastic or metal and have no handle, just straight and may or may not have some space to rest fingers when holding them. These are available at the lowest cost and available at good craft stores only in India.

Hooks with Handles:
These type of hooks are a mix, mostly they have metal for hook area and rubber or plastic for handle portion of the hook. This little upgrade makes it very easy to use the hooks in continuation and do not cause pain in fingers and wrists.

How to know which hooks to buy ?
There is no "recipe" to tell you which type of hooks you need to get, despite majority people using hooks with handles there is also a segment of people who use just basic hooks and are content with it, having no pain at all even after hours and hours of use.

Then how to buy the right hook set?
The correct way to buy the best hook for yourself is a two part process. FIRST start using a basic hook OR a hook with handle as it is very economical to buy. Then if you decide to continue doing crochet, as part TWO, go to your nearest shop that has variety of crochet hooks (not one type) and request them to let you try before you invest in the set.
Once you spend bit of time making few chains and stitches with different types of hooks your hands will feel comfortable with certain type and that is the one you need to get. Even if it is a bit costly (depending on which type you select) consider it an investment for your hands and your soul. As creating with your own hands gives you a sense of feeling that other types of work does not give and the repetitive nature of crochet makes it so relaxing for your mind and soul.

Crochet Hooks available in India
India has a unique thing going on, Gen z and older women alike have picked up hooks and trying out crochet but tools are available in not as much variety as they are in other countries. Only few companies make good quality hooks that are good for hands and comfortable to use.
Also the types of hooks are not easily available in shops, most shops keep only 1 or 2 types of hooks and those that sell very cheap priced sets are not good quality. They will not last you for years to come, so invest in branded hooks only.
Below is a photo that shows that some beautiful crochet hooks are hand carved in wood too by skilled craftsmen and may be available online or in some cities where such work is being produced. As I have not used them personally so I can't say how they are for long use but if you find these, then do share your experiences with all of us.
